ENTRANCE ASSESSMENTS

All students need to research each school on their interest list to see what entrance testing is required. All post-secondary options require a type of entrance of placement examination. Students need to check the specific testing requirements for each school.

PSAT

Picture
The PSAT/NMSQT (or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a preliminary version of the SAT. The PSAT helps prepare students to take the SAT or ACT and a great score on the PSAT can also open the door to National Merit Scholarships.  The PSAT is geared toward 10th and 11th graders.

BVA students can sign up to take the PSAT at the brick-and-mortar high schools. The cost is approximately $15.

Additional PSAT information can be found at collegeboard.com

SAT

Picture
The SAT is a standardized test that colleges use to evaluate applicants. Over two million students take the SAT every year and it is used to evaluate a student’s college preparedness. It is designed to measure a student’s ability to understand and process elements in three subjects: reading, writing, and math. Subject tests are offered for students who may choose to apply for a specific program or college that encourages it.

Students need to plan to take the SAT more than once to get the score they want for college applications. Consequently, students should take the SAT for the first time in the Spring of their 11th grade year. This allows time for them to retake the exam again in the Fall before score reports are needed for school applications.

ACT

Four-year colleges may require ACT testing for students who are applying as freshman directly from high school. Subject tests are offered for students who may choose to apply for a specific program or college that encourages it or if students test better by subject.

Students need to plan to take the ACT more than once to get the score they want for college applications. Consequently, students should take the ACT for the first time in the Spring of their 11th grade year. This allows time for them to retake the exam again in the Fall before score reports are needed for school applications.

ASVAB

Picture
The Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.

Your scores from four sections of the ASVAB: Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) are combined to compute your score on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). Scores on the AFQT are used to determine your eligibility for enlistment in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps. AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99. Your scores may be used for enlistment for up to two years from the date of testing.
