Bethel Virtual Academy is a highly independent and self paced K-12 online program, taught by Bethel School District’s certificated teachers. The majority of the students attending BVA will be considered full-time students, however students enrolled in Running Start or Pierce County Skill Center can take the classes they need outside those programs with BVA.

Students in grades 6-12 should plan on approximately 60 minutes per class per day devoted to school work and will take 5 classes per trimester.

Each student will have a Student Learning Plan (SLP), and is expected to progress on pace with that plan, students are required to engage in Weekly Academic Contact (WAC’s) with their teachers. Teachers will provide Monthly Academic Progress (MAP’s). Students may at any time reach out to teachers to schedule a time for intervention 1 on 1.

Students can expect the option to communicate with their teachers in a variety of ways. Some examples: 1 on 1 virtual feedback on assignments, recorded video instruction, or small group instruction.

Taking courses through BVA is an option and a privilege. Students who are consistently not making WAC, satisfactory MAP, or who have not had any contact with the school or their teacher for 20 consecutive days, may be unenrolled and transferred back to their “home” school. Students will be checked out a district iPad to access their online classes if they do not already have one checked out to them.

iPads

Bethel School District is a 1:1 technology school. Every student is assigned a district iPad. Teachers use the iPads for assignments, quizzes, and/or tests. Completed copies of the "Hold Harmless" and "iPad Coverage" forms are required before students will be given an iPad. To learn more about these forms, see the information boxes below.

BVA families can arrange to pick up their iPads at the BVA office. We are located on the grounds of Liberty Middle School at 7319 Eustis-Hunt Road E, Spanaway, WA 98387. We are in Portables 9 & 10 out back of the school.
When parents and students pick up iPads please bring a copy of your receipt showing you have completed the "Hold Harmless" and "iPad Coverage" Form. For step-by-step directions to completing the forms online see here.
HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT
The Hold Harmless Agreement is a mandatory form for Bethel School District students to receive an iPad.

By signing this form it is agreed that:
  • The student will immediately report any damage, lost, or stolen devices.
  • If an iPad is lost, the full replacement of the iPad will be fined to the students account unless the iPad can be found.
  • If an iPad is stolen or damaged, fines will be placed on the students account to either replace or repair the iPad.*

Additionally, all the accessories issued will be returned after the school year or when the student leaves Bethel School District. iPad accessories are not included in the iPad Coverage Program.
iPad accessories include:
  • (1)    Apple-branded iPad 10w or 12w block
  • (1)    3 ft Apple brand charging cable
  • (1)    Case for the iPad

All issued items not returned will result in a fine on your student's account.

*Subject to the enrollment of the iPad Coverage Program.
IPAD COVERAGE PROGRAM (OPTIONAL)
The iPad Coverage Program is a fantastic optional opportunity to cover the cost of most mishaps that could happen to your student's iPad.

The program helps ease the burden or worry of financial hardship that may come up due to damage that may happen that require replacing the entire iPad. Examples of typical damages we see are:
  • Broken screen
  • Bent iPads
  • Natural disasters
  • Stolen iPads
The iPad Coverage Program will cover one school year and is non-refundable.
This program does not cover the cord, case, or intentional damage to the iPad.
Electing or declining coverage is required to receive your students iPad.

Apps/Programs & Logins

SELF SERVICE
This is an app already installed on the iPad. It provides free access to many apps that teachers use in the classroom. Students can download them for free onto their iPads. Examples of apps that students will want to download immediately are: StudentVUE (Synergy), Canvas, Notability, and Edgenuity.

BETHEL TECH HELP (App available in Self Service)
This is an app already installed on the iPad. It is a form to fill out that connects directly to the Bethel School District Technology Department. Someone from technology will contact you shortly after receiving your request.

NOTABILITY (App available in Self Service)
This is an app available in Self-Service. It allows students to write/work directly on PDF documents. Students can submit assignments to teachers directly from Notability into Canvas their courses.

SYNERGY: PARENTVUE & STUDENTVUE (App available in Self Service)

This is the program Bethel School District uses to track all student information. ParentVUE and StudentVUE allow families to access student schedules, grades, and communicate with teachers. The ParentVUE web portal and mobile app will serve as direct lines to your child’s classroom – anytime, anywhere, and in any language, so you always have access to the information you need to help your child succeed. You will be able to see upcoming assignments, so you will know what is due, and when. You will have access to class websites with documents and teacher-recommended resources, grades for each class, and notifications about missing assignments. You can also sign up to receive alerts anytime your child’s grade falls below a level you specify. Both ParentVUE and StudentVUE are available in Self Service on student iPads, on any web browser, or in the app store on your personal device.

Parents will receive an email to the address we have on file that describes the process for activating your ParentVUE account. Please follow the instructions within that email to activate your account. When you first sign in, you will view the Introduction page. Please read through this information and click "Continue" at the bottom to be guided through a process to validate your student's information. If you did not receive this email, please check your Junk or Spam folders. If you still did not receive it, please contact ParentVUE@bethelsd.org.

MY BETHEL
My Bethel is how you access your student email, Canvas, Edgenuity and many other programs. The code is the first 3 letters of your birthday month, a dash, and then the two-digit day, a dash, and then either the two digit or four-digit year. (Ex: 8/31/2000 birthday would be aug-31-00 or aug-31-2000).

For help logging into My Bethel or to see a walk-through click (here) and scroll down to the “My Bethel” section

CANVAS (App available in Self Service)
Canvas is a platform in which students can access all their courses. There are also links to Edgenuity (our online curriculum) within each Canvas class. Teachers post extra course material and communicate with students within Canvas. Students access Canvas through their My Bethel login. Some BVA courses are done completely in Canvas.

For help logging into Canvas or to see a walk-throughs and resources click (here) and scroll down to the “Canvas” section.

EDGENUITY
Canvas is a platform in which students can access all their courses. There are also links to Edgenuity (our online curriculum) within each Canvas class. Edgenuity is the online curriculum for BVA. Edgenuity courses are where students will complete most of their courses.

To create an account, students go to the Edgenuity login page (here). They will enter their Username and click the “forgot your password?” box. A password ‘reset’ will be sent to their bethel school email (see My Bethel for instructions to access student email). Your student can then set their password, return to the Edgenuity login site, sign in, and access their courses. Many teachers also have a link in their Canvas course directly into Edgenuity to allow students to bypass the login screen.
